Faro Airport Capacity and catchment area
Faro international airport is located in the central Algarve, the most southern region of Portugal. It is also known as Algarve airport and represents the main passenger hub and tourist gateway to the region. It's the third largest external entrance of passengers in Portugal after Lisbon and Porto airports.
In November 2017 Faro Airport passed the barrier of 8 million passengers processed in a year. With the new enlargement and requalification works, it is expected that this number will keep rising in the coming years.
Between arrivals and departures, the current infrastructure at Faro Airport can process 24 flights and 2 400 passengers per hour. This capacity will gradually increase to 30 flights and 3 000 passengers per hour over the next four years.
Since it's opening in the 60's, Faro Airport is the only international airport serving the southern Portugal regions of Algarve and Alentejo. Together with Seville airport it also serves the community of Andalusia in the southwest coast of Spain, especially the province of Huelva, 65 km east of Faro.
The airport operates international and domestic flights, mainly tourist oriented and with seasonal peaks. It processes more than 40 000 flights annually and most of the air traffic occurs between March and October, especially during the summer months when thousands of tourists - mainly from the United Kingdom, choose the Algarve and southern Spain for their holidays.
During July and August, Faro Airport averages close to 200 daily flights and serves more than 25 000 passengers a day.
